The Bofors 40mm

The Bofors 40mm

Happy Firearm GOOD Friday!!!!!!

The Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft autocannon, crafted by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors in the 1930s, aimed to bridge the gap between close-range small-caliber (i.e 20mm) and long-range high-caliber anti-aircraft guns. The Bofors 40 mm proved ideal for service, surpassing rival designs in effectiveness and reliability as World War II approached. Proving itself to be highly effective in its role, the Bofors 40mm continued to see active service after the conclusion of WW2, even seeing action in the Gulf War.

This particular one at Owen Guns Gympie was mounted aboard the HMAS Australia II, during WWII, where it survived countless kamikaze attacks (more than any other ship in the war).
